Epiphone Casino or Gretsch 5122?
I've had a very sore shoulder recently and I'm thinking of getting a hollowbody electric to ease the load a bit. I don't think it's just my super-heavy Baja Tele, but I'm sure it doesn't help!
I have always loved the Epiphone Casino and I plan on owning one eventually. But the new (relatively) Gretsch 5122 double-cutaways are pretty sweet too.
Any of you have experience with both or either that would make a recommendation? I can't afford more than this, so a higher-level Gretsch or one of the Elitist or Lennon Casinos would be out of my price range, even used. That's not to say I wouldn't save for one in the future though.
For what it's worth, I play sort of indie/folk/rock (think Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Ryan Adams, etc) and I use a Vox Pathfinder (awesome little amp!).

I have never owned a Casino but I've owned a Rivera and a Sheraton (both Epi's).
The Gretsch's look super keen cool but that floating bridge scares the heck out of me.
I like the adjustable bridge with posts on the Epi's. I'm an intonation freak. It has to be perfect for me. The Gretsch ships with a sheet of microfoam between the bridge and the body to keep the bridge from scratching the body as the bridge will move. See the white foam?
It just spooks me.
I'd get a natural Casino with P-90's.
I expect to be the odd man out on this one.

I've been looking hard at a Gretsch too but I share your opinion on that bridge.
I'm also thinking on P90s and that Casino does look pretty good..

I guess I'm not familiar with the floating bridge -- what makes it different and why would it affect intonation?

There's absolutely nothing to be spooked about by having a floating bridge. I've had two guitars with floating bridges (including a Gretsch White Falcon), and never have had any problems at all.

It's different because it's not fixed to the guitar by being screwed into the body etc. The wooden base sits on the body of the guitar and is held down by string pressure. Intonation is not an issue. Floating bridges are not something new created by Gretsch. Archtops have had them since time began.

I wonder if the bigsby complicates the bridge issue.
wait, I looked. my buddy has a duane eddy and the chet atkins model and they both have them. no worries; they stay on at least through pretty heavy bigsby-ing. I can't speak for intonation, though.

My Falcon has a Bigsby and floating bridge. No problems with intonation whatsoever, and I use the Bigsby a lot.

White Falcons are beautiful. My worry about the floating bridge may be emotional rather than logical. I have set the intonation on many guitars and I know that moving a bridge piece microns can screw up a guitar. I like posts more than floaters. Just my opinion. Worth about .000001 cents. (-:

don't be spooked.
Floating bridges are a hollowbody staple.
-The bridge will fall off when you change strings. Unless you do it one at a time.
-you can tape it in place whenever you need to take off all strings
-it doesn't matter anyways because if the intonation is set within the saddles, all you have to worry about is moving the bridge until the outer E's are right. It takes seconds literally. I was getting to where I could just eyeball the thing and end up just about dead on. It's just like putting on your socks in the morning.
-it can move on you while you're playing if you use a light string guage. I use 10s, which is considered light for a hollowbody.
-many guys put a piece of double sided tap under it to keep it still.
-Some use a solvent free water soluble gluestick. It's not permanent, but keep it still just enough.
-I pinned mine so's not worry about it either way, although I do wish I would have known about the glue stick.
-Some guys just play with 11s, which hold it down tight.
My suggest, get the one that feels/sounds best to you. Don't worry about the bridge. It's so easy to manage, it's not worth being a factor.
I did replace those Gretschbuckers though, because I didn't find them very Gretschy, which was the reason I wanted a Gretsch. P90's would be cool though. If you'd rather have p90s and don't care about a bigsby..there you go. If you want a bigsby and don't mind regular humbuckers, get the Gretsch. You can change the pickups down the road should you want to go gretsch all the way, but if you're worried about the floating bridge, I doubt you'll be interested in changing pickups on a hollowbody. It's not the easiest thing in the world to do.
*edit*, sorry didn't realize you're very privy to setting up guitars. Then you really don't have anything to worry about because you already know about these things. Just use one of the tried and true remedies above if you find it's moving on you. I never hear anyone complaining about the floating bridge after they get to know it.
The original 5120 (limited run) had the gibson style anchored tune-o-matic. The guitar was an instant success, but that bridge was not well liked. If nothing else, probably because the Gretsch players are a lot like tele players. They adhere tightly to history. That Gibson style bridge on a big gretsch hollowbody was out of place. So when they added the guitar permanently to their production line, they changed the bridge out for the normal expected one.
A couple more differences, I believe the Casino is thinner? They're just going to sound different.

I have the 5122 and love it to death. My bridge was fixed before I got it. I dunno how/why but it is already fixed (which means it might be pretty hard to put on a rockign bar bridge should I ever choose t odo so but. whatever.) The bridge works just fine but you should replace strings one at a time. it can be a little frustrating when your bridge (the metal part) flies across the room because you were a little less than careful.
Personally, I love my Gretsch. FANTASTIC guitar and worth way more than they charge for it, in my opinion. I would also recommend upgrading to TV Jones. the G-buckers aren't too great. not Gretschy at all. Once you do that OH BOY! The full richness of the bass notes will kill you. Heck, that's why I wanted oen in the first place! On the whole very full, very warm and very pleasing.

here is an article. real short. just describing how the casino was the bedrock of the beatles late sound.
now just because i like the beatles doesnt mean you have to but i think it says something that 3 out of 4 of them played casinos. and loved them.
paul even said that if he was stranded on a desert island and only had one guitar it would be the epi.
now that being said. i have one of the chinese casinos. (under 700 bucks from what i remember) and they didnt sound half bad!
the P-90's in it are great pups!
they play clean. until you crank them and then they get raw as hell.
also acoustically the casino sounds nice. being a hollowbody and all.
i played the gretsch and noticed that the stings slipped a bit. i dont know if it does so on the more expensive models *i doubt it does. but the electrojet i looked at didnt impress me at all.
i subsequently gave away my casino to a good friend to let him play in law school. and plan on getting another one in the next 6 months to a year. every guitarist needs one in my opinion. you can hit such a wide range of sounds that you just cant get on a solid body. and with the cost being so reasonable why not?
